Dental implants are considered the gold standard in tooth replacement, tackling tooth loss head-on by replacing the whole of a tooth root.

Unlike dentures and bridges, they sit snugly in the jaw, and once a bespoke crown is placed over the top, your smile will have the new lease of life it deserves.

Outstanding craftsmanship and tooth function

Your implant treatment is fully customised to you from start to finish. Your dentist will use state-of-the-art digital software to plan your implant case, drawing on a 3D digital model of your smile to identify exactly where to place the implant in the jaw for optimal results.

A crown is then created for your implant, made with a keen eye for every curve and groove needed to make your new tooth look as natural as possible.

The most natural way to replace a tooth

Implants are a little different to treatments like bridges and dentures. They’re surgically placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic, and it’s during the healing period that they fully integrate and become strong and stable.

As your jaw heals after implant surgery, the bone begins to grow around the implant, creating a biocompatible marriage between the bone and the implant. This process ensures your implant stays strong and sturdy, whatever you’re up to, whether it’s chewing, talking, biting, laughing, or smiling.

Our patients absolutely love implants for how closely they feel and look like real teeth, and it’s no wonder they continue to grow in popularity. Many patients now choose implants over bridges and dentures for tooth replacement.

Why implants?

  • The most tooth-like answer to tooth loss.
  • Prevent jawbone recession (and changes to your bone structure).
  • Eat foods ranging from the very chewy to the very hard (which may have previously been off-limits).
  • Fixed solidly in the jaw (they won’t move around when you talk or chew).
  • A beautiful porcelain or ceramic crown gives a natural aesthetic and beauty to your new tooth.

At Brecknock Dental, we offer the traditional implant protocol, as well as the state-of-the-art ‘teeth in a day’ system, which allows patients to go home with a new temporary set of teeth directly after their implant surgery.

FAQs

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a biocompatible titanium tooth root. It is placed under local anaesthetic into the jawbone. During the 2-3 month healing period, the bone in the jaw grows around the implant, accepting it as a new and natural tooth root. It’s this connection with the jawbone that makes implants such a unique treatment for tooth loss, and why it is generally considered the most desirable option for tooth loss.

I’m nervous about the surgery – do you offer sedation?

We can offer IV (intravenous) sedation if you feel nervous about the surgical procedure to place the implant. This is a form of conscious sedation that eliminates any feelings of fear or anxiety, helping nervous patients to fully relax when they are in the dentist’s chair.

Rest assured, every measure is taken to ensure your comfort, but if you do feel apprehensive about treatment, sedation is highly recommended.

Am I suitable for a dental implant?

Adults of all ages are potential candidates for a dental implant. You must have enough healthy bone to receive a dental implant, as this bone will support it within the jaw.

If we find this is not the case, don’t worry. We can perform a bone graft to put you back on track for implant treatment, though in many cases we can use short implant systems that eliminate the need for bone grafts in 90% of cases!

Fortunately, today’s technology for implant placement has advanced significantly, so if you have been rejected for an implant in the past, we recommend scheduling a consultation to review your oral health status.

How long does a dental implant last?

Implants can last for 20+ years. In fact, they can last a lifetime with good at-home care and regular visits to the dentist and hygienist. Implants can still sustain gum disease (a form unique to implants called peri-implantitis), so it’s important to keep your oral hygiene in mind. Implants (just like real teeth) can fail.

The crown placed over the top of your implant will need to be replaced after 10-15 years (this varies from patient to patient, depending on a range of factors).
